Conwy Channel approached soon after low water

The following report by our Commodore Tony Mead could be a help for boats that are judging when to enter the channel.

At the mid point between numbers 1 and 2 buoys the depth of water as I approached was 5.4 mtrs, With this depth at this point I never had less that 1.2 mtrs beneath my keel at any time on the approach to the Harbour Entrance. The soundings at the shallow points were, 2A Buoy – 6.2 mtrs. 6 (scabs) Buoy – 3.2 mtrs. Rounding the Perch Beacon 2.8 mtrs (shallowest point), the best water after rounding the perch inbound is found by keeping slightly up to the Morfa side of the channel until abeam of the final Port Hand Buoy near the CYC Start Line.

Bearing in mind that my sounder reads beneath the Transducer Ruby, touches bottom at a reading of 1.2 mtrs. I could therefore have entered safely, with a margin for error, on the flood with a sounding of 4.4 mtrs between 1 and 2 buoys. this would have given me .6 mtrs under my keel on rounding the Perch. The predicted height of tide, at the 1745 (BST) time that I started in at from the mid point between 1 and 2 buoys, was 2.8 mtrs.

Needless to say all of the above should only be used with caution and is totally dependant on boats that do so maintaining the correct ground track between the marks and not allowing themselves to be carried off it by cross tidal flows.

As an add on to the above, the sand bar over the tunnel, that extends from the Deganwy Marina approach seaward port hand buoy towards the Aberconwy School playing fields has migrated away from the buoy towards the school and, the best water to cross it is found close to the marina approach buoy.

Acting Commodores Address

The majority of you will by now be aware that an Emergency Meeting of the Club Management Committee took place on Saturday 6 April 2013. The purpose of the meeting was to decide interim management arrangements for the club until the AGM in October, following the resignations of five members of the committee including the three Flag Officers

The meeting resolved that:

  1. The Interim/Acting Officers of the club until the next AGM be, Commodore – Tony Mead, Vice Commodore – Harry Thompson, Rear Commodore – Martin Bushnell, Secretrary – Tony Mead. It was noted that Gordon Byrom would continue his elected position as the Club Treasurer, that Steve Gorst would continue as Sailing Captain and, that Harry Thompson would retain his role as Membership Secretary. The other members of the committee that continue to serve it are, Terry Worthington, Alan Courtney, Llewelyn Williams, Peter Wrigley and Ken Robinson
  2. The proposed change of the club’s name and, all other recently decided upon changes to the way in which the club is managed, be reconsidered at the meeting of the management committee to be held on Saturday 20 April 2013.

Up River BBQ

We’ve had feedback from several club members now and it looks like the BBQ is the most popular option. Terry W has kindly offered to be the officer of the day and is currently researching suitable dates. I’ll post a firm date shortly.

Bethesda Zip Wire

Fancy a go on Europes longest and highest Zip wire? It has been suggested as a possible event and I thought a small group of us could go and try it together. Let me know if you’re interested and we’ll arrange a date. Three definites so far.

Bridgewater Visit 13/07/2013 – Cancelled

The Bridgewater visit has been cancelled this year as they can’t fit it in with their programme.

I’m looking for alternative things to do and throwing it open to everyone for suggestions.   One event that we used to run was the up river BBQ, does that sound like something we would be interested in trying again this year or would you like to do something else?

All comments welcome.

Facebook Integration

I had a go at this today but it keeps wanting to point to my own facebook page instead of the clubs.

I’ll have another go tomorrow, need a coffee now and the kids are coming for dinner.

Membership Database

The current position with the membership database on the website is that it is being merged with the Membership Secretarys database so there is just one database.  This means that there will be no login facility for the members for the time being.  However we are striving to get it up and running as soon as possible.

The current login is for Administrators only.

New additions

I’ve added an events calendar to the home page which makes it very easy to see what events are coming up.  Very pleased with the way it works.  Any dates with events are highlighted.  Hovering the mouse over them brings up a description and clicking on them tales you to the event.
